CITRUS FRUITS LARGE SUPPLY OF ORANGES AMPLE QUANTITY OF LEMONS (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 7. According to a statement made by tha Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr D. G. Sullivan) arrangements have been made for 24,000 cases of oranges to be available this month. This amount is twice as large as that for January of last year, and the largest for January since 1933. Plenty of lemons would also be available, added the Minister. The Tauranga Citrus Association had advised the department that it could supply any orders sent, but the surprising thing was that orders were hot being received from fruiterers to the extent anticipated. Prices had been fixed at a conference of representatives of the retailers, officers of the department, ?nd members of the Fruit Commission. In the fixation of prices it was felt that sufficient margin had been allowed for retailers, but it had not been visualised as a permanent policy.
More than 500,000 tourists visited Callander last summer to see the Dionne quintuplets, according to statistics issued by Dr Dafoe, their physician and guardian. Of these, 350,000 were Americans. The sightseers spent more than £200.000 in North Bay, and probably a greater amount in Callander and other places en route.
