THE ROYAL WEDDING
ALL HOLLAND REJOICING ILLUMINATIONS IN CAPITAL (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) THE HAGUE, Jan. 5. (Received Jan. 6, at 9.45 p.m.) This beautiful city to-night is ablaze with millions of coloured lights, bands are playing, and students linked arm in arm are patrolling the streets, singing and shouting the names of the royal couple, whose marriage on Thursday has roused all Holland to rejoicing The Duke of Kent was present at a luncheon party given by the Queen, at which there were 250 guests, who thereafter, with Prir cess Juliana and Prince von Lippe Biesterfeld drove to a kinema, where they privately witnessed films shot by the Prince showing Princess Juliana in the royal garden on the day they were betrothed, holiday incidents, and scenes at a carnival taken by the Prince from a palace window. Queen Wilhelmina, Princess Juliana and the Prince and 309 guests after dinner attended a gala performance at the Opera House, where the audience rose and sang fervently the Dutch national anthem, followed by “ Deutschland Über Ailes” and “Horst Wessel,” when only a few voices were raised. Then came “ God Save the King,” in which the whole audience joined in tremendous enthusiasm. Dr Peter Vananrooy should have conducted the performance, but declined when he learned that “ Horst Wessel ” was included. He said he would never play a part in a song directed against Jews and opponents of Nazi views. Captain Walther Boer, conductor of the Royal Army Military Band, conducted the anthems, after which Dr Vananrooy took the baton. It is expected that the Prince will be given the title Prince of the Netherlands, with the rank of Royal Highness. It is believed that the honeymoon will be spent in the southern Tyrol. QUEEN GRANTS AMNESTY AMSTERDAM. Jan. 5. On the occasion of Princess Juliana’s wedding, Queen Wilhelmina has granted an amnesty to a large number of prisoners, including 1300 transgressors against the fiscal laws. Others have had their sentences reduced. Those who benefit by the amnesty include the mutineers on the battleship Zeven Provincien in the Dutch East Indies, in 1933. WITNESS NOT ALLOWED TO GO THE HAGUE, Jan. 5. Prince Wied, one of Princess Juliana’s marriage witnesses, is not allowed to leave Germany.
