THE D.J.C. MEETING
TO THE EDITOR Sir, —In your footnote to "Sport's" letter in Monday's Daily Times you state: "The judge ... is the only person in a position to decide the positions of the horses in a close finish." That is perfectly true, but it is a fact that is frequently forgotten by a great many - people—and newspapers. On occasion the Otago Daily Times, even after viewing the finish from a bad angle, has not hesitated to dispute the judge's decision, and it once put ' forward the* really bright idea that the judge's decision should be set aside when he had made an "obvious" mistake. Who was to say when it was an "obvious" mistake was not mentioned. Presumably the Otago Daily Times was to say. No doubt, to "Sport's " mind there were two "obvious" mistakes at Wingatui— I am, etc., W. R. Quin. Tapanui, January 1.
