AN “INFAMOUS” AWARD
THE FREEZING INDUSTRY PROTEST BY WORKERS <Per United Press Association) HASTINGS,- Dec. 14. Exception to the recently-made Dominion freezing workers’ award was voiced at a meeting held in Hastings. The following resolution was passed: “That this meeting of Hawke’s Bay freezing workers emphatically protests against the recently-made award, and solicits the support of Dominion freezing workers in an effort to have the injustices imposed by the Court of Arbitration immediately removed. In condemning the award, we stress the point that the court has not fulfilled its functions concerning the 40-hour week and the Arbitration Act, nor has it been guided by the principle laid down by the court in 1927 concerning wages. In view of the fact that the court has not faced its responsibilities, this meeting appeals to the Government to set up a commission thoroughly to investigate not only the detrimental effect of this infamous award on the workers’ livelihood but also the full and far-reaching effects outside interests are having on the New Zealand meat freezing industry.”
