CANADA TO-DAY

RETURN TO PROSPERITY "MISTRESS OF HER OWN HOUSE" TRADE PREFERENCE TO EMPIRE fPEB United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 8. " Canada to-day is just as strongly British and a supporter of the Empire as any of the dominions, but she has adopted a policy of deciding each question on its merits, not only commercially, but if any other trouble should arise. In other words, she wants to be mistress of her own house," said Mr C. B. Howard, Liberal M.P. for the County of Sherbrooke, Quebec, who arrived to-day by the Makura from San Francisco, bound for the Empire Parliamentary Association conference at Adelaide. He said things in Canada were going fine. "We were a good deal slower in coming back than you fellows because the Bennett Government, when it.,was in, was not radical, and stayed solid, but things are coming out now in good shape. The re-election of President Roosevelt was of great benefit to Canada because the trade treaty between the United States and Canada is now assured of six years to run —five years in term of government and a year that is necessary for cancellation. We want to give preference to the Empire, but naturally the United States are our nearest and handiest customers.

" We want to trade with anyone who wants to trade with us. but we prefer the Empire." He added that there was no trouble with Japanese competition, mainly because Canada was too far away to get any bad attacks.
