SWIMMING
CARNIVAL AT MILTON APPEARANCE OF AUSTRALIANS The Australian swimmers, W. Fleming and A. O'Connor, made their final appearance in Otago last evening at Milton, where a carnival was staged by the Toko Swimming Club. This was the second time the visitors had swum at Milton, but unfortunately on the first occasion heavy rain fell, and the carnival was abandoned, so that local enthusiasts had not a proper opportunity of seeing what the Australians could do. The manager. Mr Dudley Hellmrich, therefore consented that the team should appear again last night, following its return from Central Otago. A strong contingent of swimmers from Dunedin travelled to Milton, and, as a result, the majority of the open events provided some keen competition. Principal interest centred, of course, in the 50 and 220 yards invitation handicaps, in both of which Fleming competed. In the former he won off the scratch mark from S. W. Jarvis, to whom he was conceding a second, but in the other, also from scratch, he made a dead-heat of it with P. E. Mathieson, who had a handicap of ssec. Fleming was well ahead for the greater part of the journey, but over the final 50 yards he eased up and he and Mathieson hit the rope together. Additional interest was lent to the programme by a spectacular display of diving by O'Connor and Miss G. Rix, and a demonstration of freestyle swimming by Fleming, commentary in each case being given by Mr Hellmrich. P. E. Mathieson also gave an exhibition of backstroke swimming, and later, in conjunction with O'Connor, hugely amused the spectators with a burlesque diving turn. The following are the results: 50 YARDS LOCAL HANDICAP First heat: C. Keppel (2sec) 1, Miss E. Schofield (scr) 2, L. Goss (4sec) 3. Time, 35sec. Second heat: C. Wilson (2sec) 1, J. Floyd (4sec) 2, R.
