AEROPLANE CRASH
MACHINE BADLY DAMAGED OCCUPANTS' NARROW ESCAPE (Special to Dailv Times) OAMARU, Dec. 7. Shortly after noon yesterday an aeroplane piloted by Mr Vincent Cotton, of Christchurch, crashed into a gorse hedge and turned turtle when attempting to land in a paddock on Major H. S. Orbell's property at Eveline, a few miles north of Oamaru. The pilot and the passenger, Mr H. Hahn, also of Christchurch, had a very narrow escape, since, apart from slight cuts to Mr Hahn's forehead and knee, they were uninjured Both, however, suffered slightly from shock. At the time of the accident, Mr Cotton was bringing Mr Hahn, who is a photographer, down to Oamaru to take photographs of the Waitaki Boys' High School, and was attempting to land in a field not very far distant from the school when the plane overran on account of the assisting wind. It crashed through a gorse hedge and completely overturned some yards out from the hedge in an adjoining paddock. The propeller of the plane was broken off. the wings were broken, and other extensive breakages occurred to various parts of the machine. It is little short of remarkable how the occupants of the plane escaped serious injury.
