RIFLE SHOOTING

KIWI DEFENCE CLUB On Saturday the second competition of No. 2 Match was fired on the hill range by the Kiwi Defence Rifle Club over the 500 yd and 600 yd ranges. The strong fish-tail head wind and the rain that was experienced played havoc with most of the 84 scorers, and it so happened that some of the leading scorers at the first range, when shooting at the second range, flushed with their initial success, suffered the ignominy of being near the bottom at that range. With a four for his second and eighth shots and the remainder bulls, Rifleman W. Burt established an early success for the B Grade, but Rifleman N. Jones was bent on retrieving the reputation of the A Grade, and excitement was intense when he fired his last shot, for a bull would mean that he would get 49, but a little puff of wind at the crucial moment only allowed him to get a four, leaving Rifleman Burt as the best scorer at 500yds. Another good shoot at this range was that by Rifleman E. Kibblewhite, the value of whose score does not lie in its actual value, but the way in which it was obtained, as after a disastrous start he lost only two points in his last seven shots, and then at the next only two in his first five, but then, as he is just 15 years old, his strength failed, and he faded. Considering the weather, good scores were obtained at 600yds, and of these, 47 by Riflemen W. Pullar and P. Fennessey was the best. Pullar, by virtue of his stronger finish, had the honour of the best score at 600yds, making the second success for the B Grade during the day. Although he has been shooting solidly, this is Pullar's first major triumph this season, and he is to be congratulated on his clean-cut victory, as he was two points ahead of the next man. Rifleman P. Fennessey.

Interesting shooting will be seen on the next two Saturdays, when the riflemen, discarding such appliances and aids as slings and aperture sights, will fire the Service Match. The following are the individual scores:—

Deputy President F. Clayton and Rifleman R. Bowie also shot at the first range. With only one competition to complete the match the following are the leaders in their respective grades:— A Grade

DUNEDIN DEFENCE CLUB The Dunedin Defence Rifle Club shot the second competition for prizes presented by President W. Bannerman and Rifleman O. G. Miller. There was an attendance of 18, and seven shots (two optional sighters) each were fired at 500 and 600 yards. Weather conditions were fair, except for a light drizzle late in the afternoon, but baffling wind and light made high scoring very difficult. Rifleman O. G. Miller was top at 500 yards with 34, and Rifleman W. A. Graham at 600 yards with 32. Rifleman W. A. Graham headed the day's aggregate with 65. Following are the highest scores:—

WEST TAIERI CLUB The annual ladies' day was held on the West Taieri Defence Rifle Club's range on Saturday afternoon, when some 60 women and riflemen spent an enjoyable time. The weather conditions were good, except for a light shower. In the first shoot Riflemen Graham and Brooks each scored a possible. W. Irving and W. Henderson were highest in the second shoot, with 49 each. The results of the competitions were:— Ladies' Prizes. —Miss Graham 1, Miss N. Cameron 2, Mrs Dickie 3. Children's Prizes.—l. Graham 1, A. Free 2, I. Fraser 3. Men's Prizes.—Riflemen Brookes, Graham. Shaw and Marshall tied for the men's prize, and after an interesting shoot-off the results were: J. Shaw 1, A. Graham 2, W. Brookes 3. The following are the scores, with handicap:—J. Shaw 50—48, A. Graham 50—48, W. Brookes 50—46, W. Marshall 50, W. Henderson 49—49. W. Morton 48—46, W. Staite 48—49, W. Irving 46—50, B. Duff 46—50. H. Fraser 45—49, T. Black 45—43, J. Dickie 44—48. R. M'Donald 44—47, L. Townrow 44—44, H. Townrow 42—48. CLINTON DEFENCE CLUB The Clinton Defence Rifle Club fired the second match of the season on Saturday. A tricky wind and a bad light made shooting conditions very difficult at times. Rifleman T. Lamberton was the winner of the challenge button. The following are the scores together with the handicaps:—
