BEGGING LETTERS
♦ SWEEPSTAKE WINNER BESIEGED MARRIED WOMEN CORRESPONDENTS "DON'T LET MY HUSBAND KNOW" (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 5. Three grain sacks would barely hold the letters from admirers and others wishing, to share the fortune of Mr Walter Devon, winner of the £50,000 sweepstake on the Melbourne Cup, who is visiting Wellington with two friends iri a new motor car. Mr Devon estimates that it would take £150,000 to satisfy all the people who have written to him asking for help. Among several requests for Mr Devon to take over mortgages (amounting in one case to £17,000) is a letter from a man who promises a fortune through a scheme to corner the stamp-collect-ing market. Married women are the most frequent correspondents. Their letters all end with the caution, " Don't let my husband know I have written." Mr Devon's object at the moment is to enjoy himself, and he is considering taking up golf.
