Saturday, December 5 (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS Charged with drunkenness, Albert Ensor Thomson was fined 12s 6d, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Donald Christopher M'Lean pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness and to wilfully damaging a cell pan valued at 10s 6d.—Senior Sergeant Packer stated that the defendant, after being arrested for drunkenness, had caused the damage mentioned in the charge.— On the charge of drunkenness a fine of 10s was imposed, in default 24 hours' imprisonment, and on the other count the defendant was ordered to pay the amount of the damage, with an alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment. SEAMEN IN TROUBLE Karle Johan Wilhelmsen and Arne Parili Pattersen pleaded guilty to committing mischief by wilfully breaking a pane of glass valued at £l6 4s, the property of Patrick O'Gorman.—Senior Sergeant Packer stated that the two defendants were members of the crew of an oil tanker then lying in port. While walking along George street on the previous evening they had had a scuffle and had crashed into the window and broken it. Both of them were under the influence of liquor.—Each of the defendants was convicted and ordered to make good half the damage, in default 14 days' imprisonment. AN INFORMATION DISMISSED
Roy Mason, who was represented by Mr O. G. Stevens, pleaded not guilty to exceeding, within the city boundaries, the regulation speed of 30 miles an hour.--Mr J. C. Robertson appeared for the City Corporation.—After hearing evidence by Traffic Inspector Cameron and by the defendant, the magistrate said he regretted that he could not be impressed by the inspector's evidence, and he was not impressed by the way he had answered some of the questions put to him. There was considerable doubt in his mind regarding the evidence tendered by the inspector, and the defendant was entitled to the benefit of this doubt. The information would therefore be dismissed.
