TIPPLERS' UTOPIA
NATURE PROVIDES COCKTAILS A tippler's Utopia lies at Mbizweni, 300 miles due north of Durban, in Maputoland. Here Nature provides the most potent cocktail ready mixed, exceptionally pure and remarkably quick acting And you can have one over the eight for nothing. These cocktails are distilled in the ground and matured in the leaves and boles of the malala palm. To draw a cup of liquor from these natural reservoirs, all that has to be done is to knock off the short branches, cut a hole halfway down and insert a triangular piece of palm leaf an inch or so below the cut. so that the juice can drip into the cup. In three hours a cup of rich, unfermented cordial is available
The natives spend halt their lives collecting the liquor and drinking the bisulu, and the other half in getting over the consequent " hangover "
collecting the liquor and drinking the bisulu, and the other half in getting over the consequent " hangover " They are a revoltingiy slovenly lot. They soon become addicts and do little else but drink and sleep The drink is freely stocked by storekeepers and sold to natives in the district for next to nothing—in fact, it is cheaper than water, which is at a premium in these parts
