OBITUARY
MR ROBERT HOULISTON Another of the very early settlers of the Clutha district has passed away in the person of Mr Robert Houliston, who died in Hokitika on November 29 at the a«e of 83 years. He came with his parents to New Zealand i the ship Robert Hendern in 1860. The family settled on the Taieri for a year, and afterwards removed to a farm .r the Te Houka district. Like all the early settlers, b encountered many hardships. He received his education at the Balclutha School under Mr Todd (one of the «irst teachers in the school), and afterwards he took up contract work, including sod fencing. He also engaged in shearing, harvesting, and running a threshing mill. In 1878 he was married to Miss C. Cameron, of Warepa, and lived in Balclutha until the death of uis father, when he carried on the farm at Te Houka. where he was noted for his hospitality. In 1900 he removed to the West Coast, and went in for dredging for a time. After a few years he bought a 500-acre farm in the Kokatahi Valley, and farmed it successfully, introducing several methods of agriculture that were new on the Coast. He was a member of the Westland Board for some years, and was highly respected by all who knew him. His wife predeceased him a short time ago, and he is survived by a son and a daughter. MR A. W. The death occurred at Ringaringa, Stewart Island, to-day of Mr Arthur William Traill, who was head of one of the best-known pioneer families on the island He was born in the Orkney Islands 84 years ago. He was a member of the Stewart Island County Council for many years, a member of the School Committee, and a leading spirit In the establishment of the Presbyterian Church on the island. For many years he was superintendent of the Sunday School and an elder of the church. He leaves an adult family of one daughter and six sons. His wife died about two years ago. MR T. L MACKY fPER United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 3. A member of one of Auckland's earliest families, Mr Thomas Lindsay Macky, has died at Mauku, aged 78. He was closely identified with Devonport for nearly 40 years, leaving to live at Mauku about three years ago. He was a brother of the late Mr J. C. Macky, one of the founders of the firm of Mack/. Logan. Caldwell, Ltd. VISCOUNT MOUNTMORRES (United Press Association! (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 2. The death is announced or Viscount Mountmorres. The Rev. William Geoffrey Bouchard de Montmorency, sixth Viscount Montmorres. was born in 1872. He was rector of St. Paul's, Workingham, and Proctor in n invocation for the diocese of Guildford. He had travelled in America West Indies, Egypt. Morocco, the Gahara, Asia Minor, anr) 10.000 miles in West and Central Africa and the Congo. He acted as hor. A.D.C. to the Governor of Jamaica at the time of the Kingston earthcutake and received the thanks of the Jamaican Government for his services. He was ordained in 1913 and contributed much to the prer.s anril lectured extensively.
