THE THAMES OVERFLOWS
LOW-LYING AREAS FLOODED HOUSES WASHED INTO SEA LONDON, Dec 1. The highest tides for the past 40 or 50 years are reported in the Thames estuary and the east coast. The Thames overflowed the embankment at Westminster and the low lying parts of the south end were flooded. Three unoccupied houses near Lowestoft were washed into the sea, while the occupiers of other cottages threatened on a cliff edge hurriedly removed their furniture. RAILWAY LINE SUBMERGED (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, Dec. 1. (Received Dec. 2, at 5.5 p.m.) The tide also flooded pickling plots at Lowestoft, interrupting work there and half submerging thousands of barrels of cured herrings. The main railway line between Yarmouth and London was completely submerged near Woodbridge and expresses were held up till the water receded. Riverside lawns and roads alongside the upper Thames at Twickenham. Richmond, and Kew were under water for many miles and residents had to be conveyed from their homes in boats.
