The weather conditions showed an improvement on Saturday, and the games were played under favourable conditions, although the greens were on the heavy side following the rain earlier in the week. The result of the round places North-East Valley at the head of the list with 21 points, West Harbour and Logan Park tieing for second place with 18 points each. Otago filled fourth place last week, but by failing to notch a point moves well down the scale, and Dunedin, with five wins out of six sections, goes up to fourth place. North-East Valley defeated Tainui in three sections, but was fully extended to do so, the margin in favour of the winners being small in each instance —in one section by an odd point. It is pleasing to see the young Tainui Club making its presence felt. Valley’s one loss was suffered at the hands of Caledonian, and here again the scoring was very close, Caledonian getting home by a single point. West Harbour and Logan Park met, each winning a section, Logan Park by 63 to 57 and West Harbour by 59 to 40, so as far as points were concerned the honours of the day were with West Harbour. Dunedin won three sections against Otago and two against Kaituna, losing one to the last-named club. In one section against Otago Hogg (D.) ran up the big total of 40 against Ripley’s 14, and E. Harraway had a margin of 29 to 9 against Seelye. A. E. Harraway went down to Allan by a couple of points (14—16), Dunedin winning the section by 83 to 39. Kaituna’s winning section finished 12 points up (59—47) due largely to Campbell’s win against Anderson (23 — 14).

Although the Otago men went down in all three sections against Dunedin, they made a good fight of it in two sections, but were badly out-distanced in the third, Dunedin winning by 78 to 35. All the Dunedin rinks finished on the right side of the ledger—Durie 31 to Honeyman’s 10 ; Mackie 26 to Walker’s 11, and Gardmer 21 to Hamilton’s 14.

Fairfield, Opoho, Outram, and Waikouaiti (all one-section clubs) each secured the maximum points—l2; in fact, they were the only clubs to do so. It is pleasing to see Opoho in its first year in the interclub championship competition figure in the scoring so eatly in the season. Opoho met Brighton and won by no less a margin than 87 to 42. Each Opoho rink finished ahead, the biggest score being Summerfield's 38 to Dyason’s 12, but Hutton, with 31 to Smith’s 14, was not far behind. In the third rink Logan beat Pitt by 18 to 16. As usual there were many lop-sided scores in many of the games, as the following instances show:—Nisbet (Balmacewen) 29, Buick (St. Kilda) 6; Morrison (Balmacewen) 22, Adess (St. Kilda) 10; Macdonald (Balmacewen) 29, Walton (St. Kilda) 14; Renwick (North-East Valley) 37, Annison (Tainui) 17; Taylor (N.E.V.) 23, Glue (Tainui) 11: Love (Caversham) 29, Johnston (St. Clair) 16; Smith (St. Clair) 30, Edlin (Caversham) 11; Lock (Caversham) 28, Willis (St. Clair) 15; Smeaton (Kaituna) 30, W. T. Smellie (Green Island) 11; Hope (N.E.V.) 27, Edwards (Caledonian) 14; Lloyd (Caledonian) 35, Perry (Mornington) 12; Carman (Caledonian) 36, Robson (Mornington) 8; Mitchell (Caversham) 28, O'Kane (Leith) 12; Mackay (Caversham) 23, Mawhinney (Leith) 9. The following table shows the results of Saturday’s games and the points scored to date by each club;—

St. Kilda defaulted one section to Waikouaiti: Caledonian defaulted one section to Mornington. The following are the results of the matches completed on November 14 (round one). These points will be counted only if the final result of the championship is likely to be affected: Caversham: 2 wins v. Caledonian; 2 wins 1 loss v. Tainui 9 3.5 Balmacewen: 2 wins v. Anderson’s Bay 6 Leith: 2 wins v. Mornington .. 6 Tainui: 1 win, 2 losses v.' Caversham 4 Anderson’s Bay: 1 win v. Waikouaiti; 2 losses v. Balmacewen 3 Brighton: 1 loss v. Kaituna ~ Kaituna: 1 win v. Brighton .. 2 2-5 Caledonian; 2 losses v. Caversham Mornington: 2 losses v. Leith.. Waikouaiti: 1 loss v. Anderson’s Bay All other matches set down for round one were not played. DUNEDIN CENTRE v. FAIRFIELD On Thursday evening last three rinks comprising members of the centre executive journeyed to Fairfield, and a very enjoyable game was the outcome. The green, though a little heavy after the recent rains, played well, and in dry weather will be appreciated. After the play, supper was served by the ladies, and Mr J. Kirkland thanked the centre members for the visit and assured them that these games were looked forward to with a great amount of pleasure and he hoped that another visit would be paid to the Fairfield district before the end of the season. Mr J. H. Hinton (president of the centre), in reply, thanked the Fairfield members and the ladies for the kindly way in which the visitors had been catered for. CENTRAL OTAGO NOTES Three rinks from Cromwell played at Clyde on Saturday afternoon, finishing up with a win, a loss and a draw each. Davidson’s rink had another win for Clyde and Nicol for Cromwell, while Miller and Wilkinson were equal. The green, which had been flooded the previous Saturday night and had a week’s rain on it afterwards, was in consequence very heavy. Wilkinson notched a seven

against Miller and Davidson notched a similar number against Austin. Scores (Clyde names first): E. George, Harlow, Paulin, W. George 17, L. Jelley, A. R. Woods, W, Holden, D. Nicol 24; Holt, S. Stevens, Edmonds, Miller 22, Congalton,, Grant, Pauli, Wilkinson 22; Harris, Lopdell, H. Stevens, Davidson 28, Fletcher, Gately, G. Stumbles, jun., Dr Austin 16. Alexandra is making a good start in the shield fixtures with 18 points in the first two games. Cromwell has won half its games, but Clyde, which has been well in the running for some years, is not shaping at all well. With only three rinks in the competition, and all old players, the club was expected to be hard to beat. Davidson’s two wins are the only ones recorded in three matches, and with Miller’s draw the club has scored 10 shield points. Challenges for the Jolly Cup are coming in freely, and the games are filled up now until after the holidays. A Cromwell rink, composed of Fletcher, Stephens, T. Jelley, and H. Wilkinson, is now the holder of the trophy, capturing the cup from Hewitt’s rink by one point on an extra head in a game last Thursday. Roxburgh will play next. Last week’s rain will make a wonderful difference to the greens in this centre. Alexandra is working hard to have its green in good order for the Christmas tournament. At present it is looking really well. SOUTHLAND TOURNAMENT The energetic secretary of the Southland Bowling Centre is always to the fore as the time for his centre’s New Year tournament approaches, and already he has distributed far and wide the programme containing all the necessary information. A trip to Invercargill to participate in the annual tourney is a real holiday. The programme is well arranged and well conducted, and is not made too strenuous, and the hospitality is of the kind that Southlanders are past masters at dispensing. The writer’s personal experience is that foi real enjoyment the Southland tournament takes second place to none. If anyone wants any information, a letter to Mr J. C. Thomson, 57 Beatrice street, Invercargill, will receive immediate and courteous attention.
