THE BURDEN OF TAXATION

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Mr F. R. Hall is evidently utterly ignorant of the present burden of income tax. He doubts if the income tax has been trebled on some incomes, because it has not been trebled all round It may interest him to know that the small-salaried men of from £4OO to almost £BOO a year have had their income tax trebled, while the bigger-salaried men have had comparatively slight increases. 1 know of one head of a business whose tax has gone up very little—he has a large salary—whereas his second in command on half as much salary has had his tax doubled There is no doubt that, whatever the alleged policy is, this Government has hit the small incomes to the boundary. —I am, etc., Ajax. December 1.
