MR JOHN HENRY USSHER
AN APPRECIATION The passing of Mr Jack Ussher will leave a gap in the ranks of his many friends which will be very hard to fill. Few had the knack of making friends so easily and of keeping them. Few could come in contact with his cheerful personality without feeling the better for the meeting, and once one got past the surface and came to know the real man behind the smiling face one found a depth of character and fund of sound common sense which made a deep impression. Mr Ussher was always there to give a helping hand when required—nothing
was 100 much trouble to him. His memory was prodigious. He never forgot a contact, whether in the army, the country districts where he spent so much of his business life, or in the town; and he could recall incidents which were long forgotten by others who had taken part in them. When with Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., at Dunedin, Gore, Edendaio, and Kelso, he had the reputation of being one of the most reliable men on the road. This reputation followed him through his career. As manager of Todd Bros., Ltd., Gore, and during his two years and a-half as sales manager of Producers, Ltd., he more than lived up to the fine standard previously set. Few had Ihe knowledge of Otago and Southland farmers which was possessed by Jack Ussher. and few inspired more confidence. His work at the unemployment depot at Anderson's Bay is just another instance of his method of showing human sympathy in a practical way. It was no (lash in the pan. but an effort maintained steadily for over two years. Although he will possibly best be remembered by some as a bowler, by others as a comrade on active service, and by others again as a stock agent, only those who had the privilege of seeing him in his home with his wife and throe fine boys will appreciate what his heme meant to him. It came first at all times. The atmosphere was an atmosphere of happiness and comradeship. It is hard to imagine a more fitting helpmate Than Mrs Ussher, who, before her marriage, was Miss Jessie Mackay. of Rivcrsdale.
The sympathy of his many friends will go out to Mrs Ussher and her sons in their sad bereavement
