LONGER LIFE IN STOCKINGS
Although there is the natural inclination to wear new silk stockings before they have lost their pristine freshness, it is well to remember that a little pre-wear treatment will add to the length of their life very substantially (states an exchange). New stockings are liable to ladder at the first wearing more than at any subsequent occasion, but this can be obviated to some extent by running them through slightly soapy water before using. The life of new and old stockings can be preserved by rubbing the heels and toes —the points of hardest wear — with a piece of common soap. The very fine chiffon weaves should be delicately darned on the inside of heel and toe with silk to ensure extra wear.
An economy hint of great value is to buy two pairs of stockings of the same colour at the one time. Because one of a pair almost invariably wears out before the other, the good one can then be matched with the better of the second pair. As an alternative, remember the shade purchased and the brand, so that it can be matched again without difficulty.
