On Tuesday last Tawanui Women's Institute met. The president, Mrs Sharpe, welcomed the district organiser. Mrs Tubman gave a travel talk on “The Continent.” The competition —a plate of oven scones—was won by Miss Hughes. A bring and buy in aid of the health stamp campaign was held.
The Lovell’s Flat Institute met in the hall on Wednesday evening, Mrs Robinson, sen., occupying the chair. The motto was, “ The only way to have a friend is to be one.” A debate was held on the subject “Is wealth necessary to the enjoyment of life? ” The affirmative side was represented by Mrs K. Clark, Miss Clarke, and Miss M’Queen, the speakers for the negative side being Mrs Carruthers, Miss Fletcher, and Miss Mavis Joyce. Mesdames J. Clark and H. Sutherland acted as judges, and gave their decision in favour of the negative side. The first place in a competition for “A plate of sandwiches ” was secured by Mrs Joyce, Mrs Robinson being second and Mrs Carruthers third. The hostesses were Miss Gardiner and Miss Fletcher.
Mr Tweedie presided over the November meeting of the Kaitangata Institute on Thursday last. The motto was, “To the past, happy memories. for the present, good wishes, for the future, every blessing.” Mrs Logie gave a demonstration on “ Icing a Christmas Cake.” The competition was “Institute banner.” Mrs Bowmar read the report of the half-yearly council meeting held at Waiwera on October 18. Misses J. Carter, M. Leishman, and Mrs Balloch were hostesses.
The Palmerston Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting last Thursday, Mrs Page!, vice-president, presiding over an attendance of 40 members. The motto was “Life is short, make haste to be kind.” The golden thread was taken by Mrs A. H. M'Gregor. The competition—for a Christmas novelty not costing more than 2s fid—was won by Mrs J. M'Gregor, with Mrs Rhodes second and Mrs Hitchcock third. Miss Annie Hitchcock gave a demonstration on making pine-needle baskets. Mrs A. Wright won the best flower competition. Mrs Pringle and Mrs Finnic were in charge of the social half-hour.
