WOMEN’S DIVISION N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION

The Palmerston branch of the W.D.F.U. met in the supper room on Friday, Mrs D. Ross presiding. The roll call was, “ Interesting cuttings from newspapers.” Musical items were given by Mrs Wedge and Miss Stenhouse. Members from the Farmers’ Union meeting arrived later and joined the ladies in a community sing.

The Warrington Division held its annual birthday party on November 20, when members of the Seacliff and Waitati Institutes and members of the Merton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union were present. Mrs M’Aleese extended a welcome to the visitors. The programme included step dancing items by mm-

bers of the Kemp family, sailor’s hornpipe by Mr Kemp, and a song by Mr Penns. The birthday cake was carried in by Mrs Kemp, the candles were blown out by Miss Borthwick, and Mrs White performed the ceremony of cutting. A dance was later held, the lucky spot waltz being won by Mrs Clarke and Mrs Watson, and the statue waltz by Miss Borthwick and Mr G. Lyall. The mystery parcel was won by Mrs Thomson, and a competition by Miss Clarke. Mr Souter acted as M.C., and Mr O’Connor as pianist, during the evening.

The Portobello branch held its sixth birthday on Friday in the Coronation Hall. The president, Mrs Wilson, welcomed all present. • The programme was contributed to by Mr and Miss MacArthur, duet; the local children, playette, “The Fairy Prisoner”; Miss N. M‘Cartney, recitation; Mr Freeman and Mrs Gardiner, songs; Miss Atkinson, tap dances; and junior members of W.D.F.U. and Young Farmers’ Club, “Music Round the Camp Fire.” Mesdames Habershon, Mason, and Mr Harbrow acted as accompanists. At the conclusion of the concert programme the birthday cake was illuminated and cut. Mrs North, the donor of the cake, lit the first candle, others assisting being Mrs Douglas (Otakou W.D.F.U.), Mrs Rae (Papanui Inlet W.D.F.U.), Miss Borrie (provincial secretary), Mrs Thompson, and Miss Jopson (Broad Bay Women’s Institute), Mrs Robinson (Macandrew Bay Women’s Institute). Mr Hellyer (Portobello Douglas Credit Circle), Mr Kahu (Otakou Young Farmers’ Club), and Mr Wilson (Portobello Y.F.C.). Mrs Elliot (provincial president) cut the cake. After supper, dancing was enjoyed.
