SAVING TO COUNTY

£2OOO TO HAWKE'S BAY MR SEMPLE QUOTES FIGURES iPer United Press Association) HASTINGS, Nov. 21. At Napier, on Thursday, Mr Semple .said the Hawke's Bay County Council saved £2OOO as the result of the board taking over main highways, to which the chairman (Mr Logan) said the saving was £2OO at most. Mr Semple now supplies figures which show that the cost to the county for the year ended March, 1935, was £llß9. for the following year £1022. and for three months of the current year £346. The board proposed to reseal 12 miles in the next financial year, and if this work had not been taken over by the board it would have cost the county well over £2OOO. " In the face of these figures, which are absolutely correct." said Mr Semple, " the statement of the chairman that the saving would not be £2OO was absolutely absurd." The dispute arose during a discussion on the county's decision to suspend certain road work because of the extra costs imposed by recent legislation.
