ENORMOUS LOSS
FIRE IN DISTILLERY STARTED BY LIGHTNING (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) BRISBANE, Nov. 22. (Received Nov. 22, at 6.30 p.m.) Lightning during a tropical thunderstorm set fire to the Milliquin Sugar Company's large rum distillery at Bundaberg last night and caused damage amounting to nearly £1,000,000. The blaze lit up the whole of East Bundaberg, and residents were unable to approach within 300 yards of the flames. Half a million gallons of the finest rum and between 30,000 and 40,000 gallons of methylated spirits, in addition to the valuable plant and buildings were destroyed, but the molasses store adjacent, which has a capacity of 1,000,000 gallons, was saved by a fortunate change of wind. Many terrific explosions occurred. Firemen and scores of distillery employees worked for hours quelling the fire, which was one of the worst in-Australia's history. Streams of burning rum and methylated spirits flowed for hours from the inferno into the Burnett river.
