SOUTHLAND RACING CLUB
SUCCESSFUL SPRING MEETING GUARANTEE WINS THE CUP THE SPRINT TO ALL HUMBUG (From Our Special Reporter) INVERCARGILL, Nov. 21. The Southland Racing Club's spring meeting was held on Saturday last in dull and threatening weather. Light rain fell during the morning, but beyond a mild drizzle the afternoon kept comparatively fine. The track supplied excellent going without being particularly fast. There was a large attendance, which had increased considerably after the first two races on the card. The fields proved to be much stronger than anticipated as a result of some horses being saddled up twice during the afternoon. Guarantee was made a good favourite for the Southland Cup. A slow pace over the first half-mile saw him running with the field instead of trailing it, as is usually the case when speed is turned on from the rise of the barrier. They ran the first half-mile in 55sec and the last half-mile in 49 3-ssec, and it will be seen that the field was loitering on the journey for the first six furlongs. Guarantee had to be shaken up in the run home to wear down Grand Finale and Tauramai. AH Humbug won the Flying Handicap and beat Amelita by half a length, but the win contained an element of luck, as the latter was not handled to the best advantage. Amelita was going well coming round the top and looked a sure winner but her final run came too late to win. The final event on the card produced an exciting finish. Daring Deed and Wild Career turned for home together, and inside the final furlong the latler headed the Wingatui mare, and Amelita put in a challenge. Daring Deed came again and beat Wild Career by a short neck in the last couple of strides, and Amelita was the same distance away. Guarantee looked dangerous as they came to the home turn, but appeared to be carried a bit wide. During ihe day Mr T. Marshall got the fields away from a good line, except in the Triav Handicap. During the day the totalisator, operating on the win and place system, registered £15.578, as against £10.652 10s last year. Details:— SOUTHLAND HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, Of 125sovs. One mile.
