RACING NEWS

By Sentinel

Home Again A. E. Ellis returned from Australia last week and promptly resumed riding workat Riccarton. Linguist . Linguist was staying on well when she won the Stewart Island Handicap in lmin 27 3-ssec. Settling Down Patricia Holm appears to be settling down and may prove more than useful, as she has a good turn of speed. Lochlaggan Lochlaggan is fining down into racing shape, and finished a good fourth at Invercargill. - Bad Bets Both Wall Street and Ocean Singer ran bad races in the Southland Cup. for which they were well supported. Royal Pal Royal. Pal could not act in his race at Invercargill, and probably when Smoko sprawled he may have unbalanced the Paladin gelding. Natty Natty did not seem able to raise a gallop in her race at Invercargill and was in deep trouble a long way from home, A Voight Victory

Rodeur's win at Invercargill was in no small measure due to the capable manner in which F. Voight handled his mount.

Sailing Xady The'Lord Warden filly Sailing Lady has a goad turn of speed and should soon enter the list of winners. Her dam, Set Sail, was more than useful in her day. ;:, Moneyless

Moneyless showed, a good turn of speed last season, and displayed a retention of it at Invercargill. He may be amongst the winners at the coming holiday meetings. A New Judge

A new judge in Mr W.: F. Young officiated at the Southland Racing Club's spring meeting and gave prompt and accurate decisions.

A Change Mr J. M. Samson and D. P. Wilson broke a long run of outs when Guarantee won the Southland Cup. It may be the turn of the tide bringing more luck in its. wake. A Spectator 1 *,'

, L. J.. Ellis was amongst the spectators a\ the Invercargill meeting. He might have, converted some of the losers into winners if,in the. saddle.

Bun Fight The sister to Fracas appears amongst the nominations for the Ashburton meeting. She was a winner as a two-year-old, but lost form and went out for a lengthy spell. Bred in N.Z.

At the annual Cup sales In Melbourne this month'the-Maxwell studmaster, Mr J. G. Alexander got 160 §uineas for a two-year-old bay filly, y Rabbi from Ashform, by Ringform. Francis Drake

Mr F, Armstrong, the owner of Francis Drake, could have sold the Chief Ruler colt several times, but he has no desire to part with him. He will race next in the Great Northern Foal Stakes on Boxing Day at Ellerslie.

Out of Twie Ballad was made favourite for the Stewart Island Handicap, but after travelling, like a possible winner until rounding the far turn he petered right out. His form at Gore made him out a much better horse than he was at Invercargill. , Tauramai

Tauramai was allowed to hold up the pace in the first six furlongs of the Southland Cup. He had sufficient speed to finish a fair third, although his appearance did riot suggest ability to see out a solidly-run race. Galleon

Galleon was a certainty beaten in the Southland High-weight Handicap. He was at the tail of a well-strung-out field, and appeared to have an absolutely hopeless chance of getting amongst the money. Nevertheless he made up a lot of ground and, finished a close third. Amelita

Amelita was travelling under a good hold as she came round the top in the Flying Handicap and it seemed merely a question of letting her go to record a win. Some trouble took place at the turn, and All Humbug got a bit of a break which Amelita failed to wipe off when making a late run. Silver Choir

The Australian-bred colt Silver Choir bore a well-seasoned appearance when produced for the Roslyn Trial Handicap, but his merit was left undiscovered through getting left at the post. Silver Choir, who has been responsible for good track work, was got by Silvius from Seraphyna, by Linacre—Serinette, by Grafton. Suspensions

Two suspensions were imposed at Invercargill on Saturday. J. Dooley was suspended for two months for crossing Paladino near the home turn in the Flying Handicap, and after the Trial Handicap E. Rosewarne was stood down for two months. The Judicial Committee held that Rosewarne came in too quickly on Barley Almond and caused interference which brought down Rifle Range, Western Song and The Jeweller. A Good Finish ' Wild Career looked the bet of the meeting when he went out • for the Tradesmen's Handicap, but after looking a sure winner half a furlong from home Daring Deed worried him out of it in the last few strides. Daring Deed does not always run to her best form, but when in the mood takes some beating. Amelita shaped very well in the same race and took part in the best finish of the day. Cause of Trouble

Mr T. Marshall did excellent work at the barrier at the Southland Racing Club's spring meeting except in the Roslyn Trial Handicap, in which Silver Choir, one of the favourites, and Bonazel were hopelessly left. It appeared as if the starter did not notice that both horses backed out and so they got left. This could not have happened if the starter operated from an elevated position. Clubs should insist that all starting should be done from an elevated position, as the best of starters have sometimes failed to notice that a horse has backed out through operating on the ground.

A Welcome Home Interest in the coming holiday meetings will be greatly enhanced by the return home of Mr G. J. Barton's team, which is booked to arrive about the end of the month. Possibly some of the team may be sent north to race at the Auckland Cup meeting, for which general entries and forfeits are due on December 4. Mr Barton has two engaged in the Great Northern Derby in Riddle and a Countersign gelding, but the former, was sold in Australia and the latter has not displayed anything to warrant inclusion in the field. A Boon to Charity The popularity of the totalisator was again strikingly demonstrated by the amount of business recorded for the four days of the V.R.C. Melbourne Cup meeting. The aggregate sum that passed through the machines was £299,229 ss, easily a record, and £22,072 5s more than the £277,157 registered for last year's spring -carnival at Flemington. Had the weather prevailed on the final day the £300,000 mark would have been easily exceeded. According to the provisions under which the totalisators are operated, 10 per cent is deducted from the investments, half of which is set aside for the Govenment to be allocated to charities, and half is taken by the club, which apportions a percentage of that to Automatic Totalisators, Ltd. As a result of the four days' meeting Victorian charities will benefit to the extent of £14,961, and any unclaimed dividends will also be devoted to that purpose.
