COMMITTEE REPORTS The following is a summary of the reports of the various committees which will be presented at the monthly meeting of the Otago Hospital Board on Thursday evening next:— BENEVOLENT COMMITTEE The Benevolent Committee will report that during the past month 14 cases for relief have been dealt with at a weekly cost of £7 18s 6d. Casual cases for relief amounting to £SOO Is lOd were approved. During the past month six persons have been admitted to, .five discharged from, and two deaths have occurred at the infirmary ward of Talboys Home. At present 117 inmates remain in the institution. HOSPITAL COMMITTEE The Hospital Committee will submit the following recommendation:— X-RAY DEPARTMENT In connection with the letter received from the Otago and Southland Division, British Empire Cancer Campaign Society (Inc.) as to the desirability of bringing the deep X-ray Therapy Department up to the standards of efficiency demanded by modern treatment of cancer, which it is understood will involve, besides a new building to house either the deep X-ray therapy department or the radio-diag-nostic department, a new and modern deep X-ray therapy plant capable of giving a maximum of 300 kv„ provision be made for consideration of this in next year's estimates, for a new diagnostic department. The society intimates that it is willing to consider making a substantial contribution towards the cost of the new plant. ALTERATION TO BY-LAWS The committee will further recommend that in compliance with the request of the honorary visiting staff, the time of applications and appointments to the staff be altered to coincide with the appointments of the stipendiary staff—namely, that applications be called for in October and November, and appointments made as from January 1 each year. The present appointments will continue until March 31 next, but the following year these will be for nine months. The committee will report as follows: SECOND LECTURE THEATRE The plans having been approved by the Otago University Council, the architects have been instructed to proceed with the detailed plans and call for tenders for the proposed second lecture theatre at Dunedin Hospital, and to incorporate in them the proposed new plaster room, patients' examination room, and doctors' room. The cost is to be borne by the Education Department, through the University Council. PAYING WARDS A deputation has been received from the honorary visiting staff regarding the suggested establishment of intermediate and paying wards in association with the Dunedin Hospital, and it was resolved that the matter stand over for further consideration in January next. FINANCE COMMITTEE HOURS OF WORK The Finance Committee will report that the report submitted by the secretary in regard to the extra cost involved upon the introduction of the 40 or 44 hour week has been received, and the matter held over for consideration at the conclusion of this meeting of the board. The proposal for a five-day week plan for the office staff will also be considered along with the report. TENDER ACCEPTED The committee will also report having accepted the tender for the supply of crockery submitted by Messrs Paterson and Barr for Messrs Johnson Bros.
