SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

The second general meeting of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society oi Otago'was held yesterday. . . .The Council laid before the meeting a set of rules which they had drawn up for the guidance of the Society. After some discussion the rules were adopted, and in accordance with one of these the meeting proceeded to fill, up- the vacancies in the Council. . .' . THE EXPEDITION TO THE AUCKLAND ISLANDS. H. M. Colonial war-steamer Victoria, Commander Norman, arrivea here yesterday morning from her expedition to the Auckland Islands in search of shipwrecked persons who it was supposed might be upon those islands! The result of the voyage is that no person has been found on theAuckland group or upon any of the others visited by Commander Norman ; nor was any trace of shipwreck discovered beyond what has already been reported by Captain Musgrave, who commanded the Grafton at the time of her wreck. That gentleman accompanied the expedition ;, and we heai that he thoroughly agrees in the conclusion that there can be no living person on the groups of islands visited or skirted during the Victoria'r. cruise. The' Victoria left Melbourne on the 4th October, and arrived at the Auckland Islands on the 10th. A searcn of . the north-western shores of the main island was commenced on the 11th, and was continued until the 14tH, when the ship was anchored in Ross or Lowry Harbor, the site of the once Enderby settlement. There th° search was vigorously continued; and the remains of the man found and buried by Captain Musgrave were exhumed. The object was to ascertain by an examination of the skull, &c, whether there were any signs of the deceased's death having been caused by violence; but no such sign was found. . . .
