SANDERS CUP TRIAL

LYNETTE WINS FIRST RACE HARD TUSSLE WITH EILEEN Completed only a few days ago, and out'on its first real trial, Mr C. J. Pettitt's Lynette won the first race on Saturday to select Otago's challenger for the 1937 Sanders Cup contest. It gained the victory only after a stern tussle with Eileen, which hung to the winner all the way and suffered defeat by less than half a minute, the actual distance between the two craft at the finish being about six or seven boat lengths. Winifred was third, about a minute and three-quarters behind the leader, but the oilier* two starters, Yvonne and Betty, were a long way back, the latter retiring before she completed the course. The course was a windward and leeward one, starting from the Victoria wharf, round Challis's buoy and back to the Kitchener street pile. This course was sailed twice, finishing with a beat up to the starting line. Winifred was first over the, line closely followed by Lynette, Eileen, Yvonne, and Betty in that order. Yvonne was the first to go about, but the others stood well over to the Peninsula, Lynette and Eileen being the last to break tacks. By this time thev were well to weather of the other 14footers, and on the long beat down to Challis's buoy they were sailing practically neck and neck. Lynetto gained the advantage nearing the mark and rounded nearly a minute ahead, Eileen and Winifred, which had sailed a particularly good race up till thai point, rounding almost together. Yvonne was four minutes and a-half behind the leader, and Betty was well back last. On the run before the wind with spinnakers set, Eileen made up a little of the ground on Lynette. but the latter held the lead and rounded the Kitchener street pile wiln 18 seconds to spare. These two now had the race to themselves, Winifred, Yvonne and Betty being well in the rear. The positions were not altered in the second round, when the leaders Staged a great struggle for first place Eileen hung to Lynette the whole way, but could not overtake her, although had the course been much longer she might have had a chance. Lynette crossed the line 29 seconds ahead of Eileen, Winfred being third one minute and three-quarters later. Yvonne finished 14 minutes behind the leader. The sailing times were as follows: Lynette, 2hr 6min 1 Eileen, 2hr Cmin 29sec. .. 2 Winifred, 2hr Bmin 15sec .. 3 Yvonne, 2hr 40min 4 CORNWELL CUP RACE The first Cornwell Cup Trial was also held on Saturday afternoon over a triangular course from the Kitchener street pile to the Castle beacon to a buoy of the Belcher wall, twice round.
