Jumping out much better than on the first day, the second fancy, Airam, won the Juvenile Handicap in good style from the each-way favourite, Bachelor King Airam was always handily placed, and sh ran past Feldberg at the distance to win with a little in hand. Bachelor King lost a prominent position at the turn, and it was only near the end that he got up to cut British Nation out of second Raceline shaped creditably for fourth. Feldtaerg displayed speed in reaching the front in the middle stages but she tired quickly in the run home. The three-year-old Haputale scored at good odds in the Hore Hore Handicap. in spite of the fact that he was bracketed with Spearcourt. who ran a close fourth on the first day. Haputale reached the front early with Palustre and was never afterwards headed, although he did not have much to spare from King Theo at the finish. King Theo did not have the best of luck and further hampered his prospects by coming out very wide under pressure in the straight Palustre was placed third but it appeared from the press stand as if Free Advice had beaten her for that position J. H. M‘Rae made a successful reappearance in the saddle when he won the Kirikoouni Hurdles on Illuminagh, his first mount since he had his leg broken at Trentham in July Illuminagh was near the rear early when Lap Up was the only horse behind him. but he moved up handy three furlongs from home and assumed the lead from All Irish at the second to last fence. There was not a great deal between the pair in the final stages, but Illuminagh always had the call All Irish made a very creditable showing and Lap Up battled on for third Royal Toast held a good lead about three furlongs from home but tired very quickly The win favourite. Paso Robles, finished resolutely to score narrowly in the Omana Hack Handicap from Surella who came home ungenerously after looking a winner at the distance Surella displayed his usual brilliance early and soon headed off Marjory Daw. who jumped out with a clear advantage from No, 1. It looked as if Surella would see it out when he was travelling well below the distance, but he failed in the last little bit. Paso
Robles finished in most determined fashion and is on the improve. Lady Diana ran a good race and ValamitO also shaped well although he weakened near the post. Waitaka did best of the others and should do better when his condition is more advanced. The President’s Handicap provided a great finish in which the first four horses flashed past the post almost in line. Orac made most of the running from Tybalt and Crooning, who were together, ahead of Gay Talkie. It appeared as if Tybalt would win when he dashed to the front below the distance, but he weakened near the end and missed a place, although he was barely half a length from the winner. Victory went to the consistent Crooning. who was very patiently ridden by L. Clifford, her final effort being timed to a nicety. Gay Talkie ran another good race and again finished with determination. Silver Brier ran right up to form and finished on very gamely. It was Croonlng’s first suc-$ cess at a mile and a-quarter and she thoroughly deserved her victory. The each-way favourite. Tray Bit. spread-eagled the field in the Ruawai Handicap. Running to the front in the first furlong he gave nothing a chance at the end, and came right away. The judge declared his winning margin to be two lengths and a-half, but that was a very conservative estimate as he was well deal 1 . Blue Needle and Lady Ruler had a great tussle for second, and the former just gained the honour. Princess Star showed up prominently for about five furlongs, and then tired to finish fourth. Sebrof led early, and tailed right off. Ridden by the Apprentice H. Maria, Triune claimed a 51b allowance in the Waihue Handicap, and he justified the confidence of his supporters by winning easily. Triune followed the pacemakers, Whakapara and Nun Nicer, who ran up quickly after dwelling a little at the start, and soon took their measure in the straight. Whakapara battled on for second, and High Tea ran on for third after being tailed off most of the way. It is customary for High Tea to take a little time to find his feet, but on this occasion he got unusually far behind in the small field. Nun Nicer tired in the last furlong. He now makes a noise, but his racing is likely to improve his condition. Necks separated the first four horses in a great finish in the Hoanga Hack Handicap, and victory went to the moderately-fancied Tutor, who returned double figures on the win machine. The fact that he was not bustled early stood to Tutor in a hard contest, and. after being seventh into the straight, he just outstayed the consistent Mainland, who looked like winning when she came through on the rails below the distance. Valpai fought on gamely to be third, and High Quality, after being last away and in the rear, made a great effort to get up fourth. Valrent attempted to win all the way after being bustled to the front early, and he failed only near the end. Lornacre was made a lot of use of early to secure a position after beginning from near the outside, and this left him wanting in the last half furlong. Dutch Girl was closer at the finish than at any other stage, and Muskon made a creditable showing for seven furlongs.
