DRUIDISM
The fortnightly meeting of the Royal Oak was held on Monday night last, P.A. Bro. W. Hudson presiding over only a fair attendance of members. A large contingent of Bay members was in attendance, and after the routine business had been speedily disposed of the two lodges engaged in a keen debate on the subject Should a Friendly Societies .in New Zealand Amalgamate? ” The Bay Lodge took the affirmative side and after a keen and close contest were awarded the decision. The speakers forthe Bay Lodge were Bros. Wilson, Clinch and Hastie, and for the home team Bros. Jones, Hinton and W. Hudson. P.D.P Bro. Wilson carried off the individual honours, putting up an outstanding performance as leader of the affirmative. In announcing his decision, the judge Bro. A. Milne, gave a most instructive criticism* of the various speakers, and was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for the able manner in which he carried out his duties.
A suggestion that the little black shag did not eat trout was made by Mr R. A. Falla, ornithologist at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society recently. There was no doubt that the big black shag destroyed trout, while the little white-throated shag also was suspected. It had not been proved, however, that the little black shag harmed trout; It was agreed to make a closer study of the bird.
