WOMEN’S DIVISION N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION

Mrs Loomes presided at the meeting of the Albury branch of the W.D.F.U. It was agreed to hold a Cinderella dance in aid of the Makogai Leper Fund, the health camp, and other appeals made to the division. Miss Fraser exhibited some of solaqua painting A demonstration had been given on solaqua, and the samples were much appreciated Miss Fraser received a vote of thanks Competition results were:—Sponge—Miss Fraser 1, Miss P Simpson 2: flowers -Miss Fraser 1, Miss Waddell 2.

Mrs Hamilton presided at the October meeting of the Lauder-Becks branch. The roll call was “A verse of a poem learned at school.” Miss K. Mee gave a report on Country Girls’ Week. The competition, “Book titles,” resulted as follows: —Mrs Brown 1, Mrs Hoskin and Mrs Monk (equal) 2, and Mrs Lorimer 3. Hostesses were Mesdames Thurlow and J. Hamilton.

Mrs Frew (president) occupied the chair at the meeting of the Enfield branch. Mrs Hay (president of the North Otago Executive) gave a report of the business transacted at the Dominion Conference. Mrs Frew won the competition for the best bloom, and Mi's Yuill won another competition.

The Owaka branch met in the Memorial Hall on Thursday last. Miss Violet Miller gave a report on Country Girls Week. A competition with words ending in “ ring ” was won jointly by Mrs-’ Craigie and Miss Wennerbeck. The roll call was “Proverbs.” The hostesses for the day were Mrs Craigie and Mrs Dark. . f ; * *, * . i j On Friday evening the Bannockburn, branch held its third birthday. A' short concert' programme was given:— Song, Miss Robertson: recitation, Miss Felton: vocal duet, Rena and Eric Scott; pianoforte solo, Mr Leslie Jolly; song, Mr Deans Ritchie; and a short play, “ Florence Has Her Day,” by division members. After the concert, a cake made and decorated, by the president (Mrs Crombie) was carried in by the secretary (Miss Parcell), accompanied by Mr King and his bagpipes. Mrs Crombie called on Mrs R. Ritchie \ (Cromwell) to light the candles, Mrs T. Anderson (Pembroke) to blow them out, and Mrs T. Smith (Cromwell) to cut the cake. Misses Campbell and Crombie presented posies to the president and secretary. Otfyer speakers were Mr James Ritchie and Mr de Bettencor. After slipper, dancing went merrily with extras by Mr and Mrs King, Miss Robertson, and Mr Kilgour. Mr J. Parsons was M.C. |”

On Friday afternoon the members of the Miller’s Flat branch visited Messrs Barron and Dance’s seed farm at Dumbarton. Mr Barron explained how tulips are grown, picked, packed, and sent awsfy each year. The private gardens of both Mr Barron and Mr Dance were then admired. Afternoon tea was served under the trees on Mr Barron’s lawn, the visitors later seeing Mr Barron’s collection of pictures, china, and antiques.

On Thursday last the Hampden Hall was filled to its capacity when members and friends of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union gathered to delebrate *the branch’s sixth birthday The president extended a hearty welcome to all. Arrangements for the function were carried out by Mrs Aitcheson (president). Mrs Spears, and Miss Familton, assisted by Mr A. Spears. The concert programme vas as follows:—Songs* Mrs Congalton. Mr H. Wylde, and Mr A. Spears: and a oneact play entitled “Aunt Lizzie’s Friend.” by Mesdames Aitcheson Spears, Woodley, North, Lester. Ross, and Matthews, and Miss M, Familton (division members). Accompanists were Mrs O. G; Gould, Miss Lester, and Mrs Congalton. During a suitable interval Mr Congalton (president of the Farmers’ Unioh) made a presentation of the C.A.C- Shooting Shield won by Hampden Farmers’ Union to members W. Nicolson. H. A. Finch. E. Nicolson. H.i Nicolson, and J. Gray (absent). Mr E. Nicolson (captain) made suitable, acknowledgment on behalf of the 'rifle team, the shield to be handed orl to Mr R Walker (secretary) to hold, for the season. Mr D. J Ross (supervisor) congratulated the team, also Mr W. A. Murcott (Mayor), wishing them every success in their future competitions. The birthday cake, made and presented by Miss M’Kerrow. was brought in by Mrs Aitcheson (president) and pined around the hall by Mr Gavin Chisholm, followed by a procession of division mem-, bers led bv Mrs D. J. Ross (in national costume) The candles were lit and blown out by Mrs Aitcheson, Mrs Davis, Mrs Ross, and Miss M’Kerrcw Congratulations and thanks were extended to the branch by Mrs Rawcliffe (president. Waianakarua Institute). Mrs Davis (president. Herbert) Mr Congalton (Kartigi). the Mayor (Mr W A. Murcott-). and Mr John Murcott (chairman of the Young Farmers’ Club) Dancing and euchre were indulged in. The lucky spot waltz was won bv Miss Olive-Ford and Mr T. Joyce. The euchre prizes bv Mrs Gillies and Mr T. Harris. Mrs C.
