The police fired four times in two hours. There' were many additional casualties and hundreds of arrests. TWENTY-TWO PEOPLE KILLED BOMBAY, Oct. 16. Hooliganism is spreading despite the prohibition on carrying arms. Mobs are looting and attempting to set fire to other mosques and temples. The police fired again in the afternoon. The trams are stopped and shops in the affected areas are closed. Up to the present 22 people have been killed and 30 injured. . • POSITION GROWING WORSE BOMBAY, Oct. 16. (Received Oct. 18, at 5.5 p.m.) Despite the curfew, clashes continue over a wide area, with a total of 32 killed arid 340 injured. There are 50 stabbing cases in one hospital alone, Hindu and Moslem leaders had a conference, and appealed jointly to the communities for peace, promising a settlement of the dispute by negotiation. Ugly scenes occurred’ in the Byculla area when a mob tried to attack a Hindu temple and set fire to a mosque. Five hundred district police reinforcements rushed in and thwarted the attempt. In strange contrast, . while the ’ Indian quarter is seething with excitement, the European section is peaceful and traffic is normal. SATURDAY’S CASUALTIES BOMBAY, Oct. 17. (Received Oct. 18, at 10 p.m.) To-day’s casualties were nine killed and 100 injured, bringing the aggregate to 46 killed and 440 injured. A Moslem policeman, singlehanded, heroically defied a mob of 300 who were threatening to burn a Hindu family of five women, four children and an aged man. Reinforcements arrived and drove 'the mob off.
