CLASHES IN FRANCE

STRIKERS AND BEET GROWERS A NUMBER OF CASUALTIES CHARTRES, Oct. 16. (Received Oct. 18, at 5.5 p.m.) One person was killed and 30 injured in clashes between beet growers and sugar factory workers after a strike of 900 sugar men. Fifteen hundred farmers assembled at the Town Hall to hear a speech from the Prefect, when a procession of strikers, carrying red flags, revolvers and other weapons, approached. In the ensuing clash one farmer was shot dead and another seriously injured and sent to hospital.
