Only four started in the Nursery Handicap, and the odds-on favourite Airam duly won, although she gave her supporters a shock when she proved troublesome at the post and was badly left. The position appeared hopeless, and it was only because she was much better class than the others that she prevailed. Nearing the home turn Airam made up her leeway fairly rapidly and she was in front soon after passing the distance to run on well after a big effort early. British Nation outstayed Raceline for second, but the latter would probably have filled that position only for lugging away from the rails rounding the turn and in the straight. The other runner, Feldberg, apparently became frightened in No. 1 position and whipped round at the start, taking no part in the race. An outsider, High Star, registered a sensational surprise in winning the Maiden Handicap, paying over a century and three-quarters on the win machine and over a quarter of a century for a place. His win dividend was the largest paid in Auckland since Versant scored on the course about three years ago. Although he drew No. 22 at the barrier, High Star reached the front quickly and was never afterwards headed. Valamito ran on well to get second, and Tip Toes came from a good way back to secure third. Valamito may have been closer only for making the home turn badly. Spearcourt, Free Advice and King , Theo ran good races, and the lastnamed is a likely improver. High Star was having a very long spell and was not fancied by his connections. Improved with his recent racing. Dark Marble finished strongly to win the Kaihu Hack Hurdles from the moderately-fancied Royal Toast, who was the outsider but one of the field. Royal Toast attempted to win all the way, and failed only near the end, where Dark Marble came along in good style. Hawthorn battled on to get third, and Benighted made a fair showing for fourth. Benighted and Lap Up looked likely when they moved up at the turn, but failed to go on. The race should improve Lap Up, whose turn may come shortly. All Irish was going well in the lead with Royal Toast when he slipped into the third fence and fell. Ruling King and Mountain Bruce went out of the contest too early for any idea to be formed as to how they would have shaped The each-way favourite, Mazir, finished well on the rails to win the Dargaville Cup from Silver Brier, who returned a fair price for a place. King Tut and Knight of Australia were responsible for most of the running and when the former weakened in the straight Silver Brier joined issue. It looked as if Silver Brier might prevail, but Mazir was going nicely and when asked for an effort responded well. Securing an opening on the rails. Mazir soon gathered in the leaders and* won going away by a length and a-half. Knight of Australia battled on for third and Gay Talkie was finishing very resolutely in fourth place. Gay Talkie covered a lot of ground and should do better.

Another each-way favourite was successful when Kilonsoa scored in the Toka Toka Hack Handicap. Kilonsoa was well back early, and after following Surella. Blue Needle and Paso Robles into the straight she came on the outside to win handsomely. Surella weakened quickly near the end and Paso Robles just cut him out of second. Lady Diana was a creditable fourth. The each-way favourite, Tray Bit. received a rough passage in the Avoca Handicap, and was unluckily beaten into fourth place. Solaria jumped into him at the start, and this meant the loss of several lengths. Then, when he was running up quickly after going a furlong and a-half. he struck further trouble and was sent back again Star Artist and Sebrof were responsible for the pace-making, and the former ran on strongly to win from Triune, who made a determined bid under pressure. Mangukaha ran on fairly well for third, and Tray Bit was a close fourth.

Repeating the form she displayed in finishing second to Kelly at Ellerslle, the each-way favourite. Crooning, scored convincingly in the Hobson Handicap. Crooning followed the pace-maker. Wait and See, for most of the way. but was always a winner in the last furlong. Wait and See hung on gamely for second, and Light Comedy, a likely improver, came home in good style for third, and Tybalt was also running on in fourth position. The moderately-fancied Lornacre won at a good price in the Awakino Hack Handicap, Lornacre. Jewelled Girdle, Mainland, and Orac were prominent in the early running. Lornacre staying on soundly to beat Mainland after the latter had been in front at the distance. Whirlmint came from last at the half-mile to get third, and Jewelled Girdle was a close fourth, with Valrent, Dutch Girl, and Orac right up. Valrent. Vera Acre, Valise, and High Quality did not get away well, and the first-named ran a fine race in the circumstances.
