BADMINTON UNION

SOCIAL AND DANCE A pleasant finale to the badminton season was a social and dance held in St. Mary’s Anglican Church Hall, Mornington, on Saturday evening under the auspices of the Dunedin Badminton Union. About 40 enthusiasts attended representative of the clubs identified with the new union. Dancing occupied a large part in the evening’s programme, but probably the lively games in which all could join gave most satisfaction. Two vocal items provided an appreciated variation. The duet, “ Tell Her I Love Her So,” was harmoniously 'sung by Misses M. Owens and M. Matheson, of the Mosgiel Baptist Club, and later in the evening Miss D. Adcock, of the Kaikorai Presbyterian Club, gave the dainty theme solo “Fairings.” Miss F. Hicks (Mosgiel) accompanied both items. Much amusement was caused by the humorous ventriloquial contribution of Messrs M. Greenall and F. R. Nicol, members of the Mornington Club.

After supper, Mr J. Owens (Mosgiel), president of the Dunedin Badminton Union, presented reminders of the recent tournament to Jjhe section winners. The form of the souvenirs was a flashlight group photograph of the six section winners. Mr Owens said that his object in promoting a union was to draw closer together the different clubs, both socially and in respect to match play. The standard of play among church and other clubs was improving, and he was sure that the formation of the union would foster general advancement. The union had been formed virtually without funds, but great interest had been shown in the tournament. The section winners were as follows: —Miss B. Anderson (Kaikorai), winner of the Ladies’ Singles, cowinner of the Ladies’ Doubles, and also of the Mixed Doubles; Miss C. Anderson (Kaikorai), co-winner of the Ladies’ Doubles; Mr J. Adcock (Kaikorai), co-winner of the Mixed Doubles and runner-up in the Men’s Singles; Mr R. Stevens and Mr H. Huntley (St. Paul’s), the winning partners of the Men’s Doubles; and Mr-H. Kaye (Mosgiel), winner of the Men’s Singles.
