WRESTLING

TO-NIGHT’S BOUT A little over six years ago a world title wrestling bout was staged between Gus Sonnenberg and Everette Marshall in Los Angeles, and an astonish-ing-looking young man from New York appeared in the preliminaries, His name was Ed George (quickly nicknamed “Don"), and since then he has become one of the best-known figures the game has produced. George, who is to make his first Dunedin appearance to-night against “Wee”. Willie Davis at the Town Hall, quickly passed through the preliminary stages, and seven months after he appeared in the preliminary at Los Angeles he wrestled in the same ring against Gus Sonnen-

berg and deprived the latter of his title. That George was likely to achieve great things as a wrestler had been apparent, however, for some time. He had an outstanding career as an amateur, winning American national titles and also representing his country at the Olympic Games at Amsterdam in 1928, when he eliminated Earl M'Cready, the, present British Empire professional champion, from the heavyweight division. George is not only one of the most able of modern wrestlers,- but is also one of the most spectacular, and there should be plenty of thrills when he goes into action against Davis, The latter is the biggest and most powerful wrestler at present in the country, and can make his presence felt whether the wrestling is straightforward or marked by rougher measures. Box plans will close at the D.I.C. at 11 o’clock this morning.
