NOTES ON THE RACING

(Special to Daily Times) MASTERTON, Oct. 16. Sunee endeavoured an all-the-way win In the High-weight Handicap, but he was caught in the last few strides by Siegmund. They were well clear of the remainder. Red Rufus ran a bad race, a long way below his best form. The Maiden Race was a one-horse affair. Martara jumped away best, and the further they went the more he added to his lead, and he eventually won easing up. The favourite, Aube, was going Tike a runner-up most of the way, but at the finish he was narrowly beaten out of the money by Sir Ronald and The Pawnbroker. Lord Quex, Diamond Cutter, and Alloa were next. The winner, who is by the Martian horse Martarma, outclassed his opponents. His dam is out of the imported mare Flower of the West, and he was bred at Kinloch by Mr J. Porter. Backers went for Shy and West Tor mostly in the principal event, but they were never dangerous. Shy lost a lot of ground at the start. Rona Bay hit the front, and, joined by Gay Boy, led to the turn from Korero, Snowball, Might, and West Tor. Snowball' went to the front on the turn and led Gay Boy and Rona Bay into the straight, where the field closed up. Rona Bay finished best and won handily from the stable mates, Might and Korero, who headed Gay Boy in the last few strides West Tor and Shy were next. Rona Bay won well, and Might and Korero both put up good performances. Gay Boy was freely used, and there did not appear any need for him to take on Snowball so far from the post.

Royal Routine put a good oreak on his opponents in the Grand Stand Handicap, but over the final stages Passion Flower drew up to him and won decisively. Tiger Gain made up a lot of ground for third, and Full Throttle was fourth. Slippery missed the jump-out. A great race was provided in the Lawn Handicap, the field spreading across the track, Patagonia just got up in the last telling strides to bea* a closely packed field, but Geitel was unlucky. She lost ground at the start and then ran very wide into the straight Arrownilla ran another good race starting a warm favourite, but her extra weight stopped her at the finish Hatuma, patiently ridden in behind came along at the finish for a fairly comfortable win in the concluding event, but in another few strides Toper, who had been in the rear throughout, would have got up. He was unlucky. La Parleuse and Galteemore ran creditable races, but the former pulled up lame.
