POISONING OF DOGS

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I notice a letter appearing in to-day’s paper on the dangerous practice of laying strychnine poison for dogs. The police and the inspector of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have an almost hopeless job in seeking to bring the callous, irresponsible poisoners to justice. I do not wish to be a scaremonger, but I do feel that the public should be warned of this danger, because in a recent case of strychnine poisoning which I attended I gathered sufficient grains of strychnine off the asphalt back yard of the owner’s premises to destroy 20 other dogs. But here is where the danger lies: Supposing some child handled this bait —and it is quite possible that this may occur—the result might end in a shocking tragedy. Although no such tragedy has happened, the possibility is there, and I suggest to the residents that they search their yards every morning for poisoned meat before allowing the children out. The colour of the poison is either pink or white in powder form.— I am, etc., L. H. Frew. - Grange street, October 16.
