OBITUARY

MR HENRY GREENFIELD The death took place at his residence, Allnatt street, Temuka, on Tuesday of Mr Henry Greenfield, an old resident of Temuka, who was a well-known figure at sports meetings and previously had filled the post of caretaker at the motor camp and swimming baths Mr Greenfield was a native of North Otago, where he spent his early life, and after working at various occupations in parts of the South Island finally settled in Temuka. As a superviser of the sports areas under the control of the Temuka Domain Board he gave the utmost satisfaction, and visitors from all parts of the Dominion spoke in appreciative terms of his ever-ready assistance at the motor camp. He is survived by his widow and a grown-up family, including Messrs A. P Greenfield (Dunedin) and J. Greenfield (Timaru), and Mesdames G. Mathieson (Christchurch) and E. Parish (Temuka).

MR WILLIAM SIMCOE The death occurred at the Dunstan Hospital on Monday last of Mr William Simcoe, who had been a resident of Alexandra for the oast 15 years. The deceased was born in London 39 years ago. and enlisted in the army at the age of 16 years. He was badly gassed in the Great War. He came to New Zealand in an endeavour to regain his health Mr Simcoe took an active interest in the sporting life of the town, particularly on the bowling green, where he had been one of the club’s best players for a number of years, and acted as *skip in the various competitions He was also the club’s greenkeeper, and acted as referee for the Hockey Club and as marker for the Miniature Rifle Club. Mr Simcoe was an active member of the Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade, having received his early training in fire-fighting as a member of the London Fire Brigade. The funeral took place at Alexandra on Wednesday, The members of the Fire Brigade and Returned Soldiers’ Association attended, and the coffin was borne to the Alexandra Cemetery on the fire engine The serat the church and graveside were carried out by the Rev. W. J. Bevis. The “ Last Post ” was sounded at the graveside by Bandmaster W. Bringans.

MR J. A. WALCOTT (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 16 Mr James A. Walcott, secretary of the Titahi Bay Golf Club, collapsed at the club house and died almost immediately. Mr Walcott, who was 63 years of age, had been in ill-health for some time Born in Dunedin, Mr Walcott was educated privately and at Christ’s College, Christchurch. Later he entered the Union Steam Ship Company, retiring 10 years ago. He is survived by his wife and three sons —Messrs J F. Walcott and B. R Walcott, of Dunedin, and Eric Walcott, of Wellington. A brother of Mr Walcott’s died a week ago.
