MISS JEAN BATTEN “COMES HOME”

SUCCESSFUL TASMAN CROSSING DOUBLE RECORD ESTABLISHED One of the greatest achievements in the history of aviation was accomplished yesterday by a New Zealand girl, Miss Jean Batten, who completed the last stage of her flight from England, via Australia, by crossing the Tasman in record time. Miss Batten left the Richmond Aerodrome at 6.30 a.m. New Zealand time, and, making an unerring landfall at New Plymouth, continued on to Auckland, which she reached at 5.5 p.m. Throughout the length and breadth of the country the keenest interest—not unmingled with concern—was displayed in her flight, and when the news of its successful completion was announced the general sense of relief that was experienced instantly gave place to feelings of pride and admiration. Undeterred by the prophets of disaster, Miss Batten had fulfilled her resolve—she had “come home.”
