"GO-EASY" POLICY

THE OHAI MINERS A REDUCED OUTPUT (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 7.' The provision in the Finance Act restoring the wage level to the 1931 level is having its repercussions on the mining industry in the Ohai district colleries. Under this wage scale a coal miner would be capable of earning as high as £3 12s per day, but the miners are aware that the whole position is to be reviewed within the next few months, and to obviate a possible reduction in the wage scale they have adopted a " go-easy" policy and are content to earn slightly over £2 per day. Mine proprietors are finding this policy injurious to their welfare, as the continuous spell of boisterous weather throughout Southland has made the demand for coal unusually heavy for this period, of the year. Most mines in the Ohai district have been forced to reduce their staffs in September in the past few years, but the demand for coal will keep them working at full capacity for some time, as the output per day is not so heavy as it was under the reduced scale of wages prevailing prior to the operation of the new legislation.
