CATHEDRAL CARNIVAL

AN ATTRACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT There are many well-known figures in local theatricals taking part in the variety and vaudeville entertainment which has been arranged by the Roman Catholic community of Dunedin at His Majesty's Theatre. The carnival is being held for the purpose of raising sufficient funds to complete the liquidation of the debt on St. Joseph's Cathedral. Coupled with the entertainment programme there is also a bazaar, which includes a wide variety of attractions. At last night's entertainment there was another large attendance, and the work of the various performers was at all times of a high standard. The ballet was seen in some bright and attractive numbers, and added to this the lighting and stage effects were particularly effective. Mr Kevin Dun and Miss Abraham were seen in another exhibition dance, and Miss Tui Northey and Mr James Macfarlane appeared in some light song numbers. Miss Joyce Rowley gave another fine 'display of tap-dancing, and Mr Harold Bain and Mr Alex M'Dowell were heard in solos. In the selection "Picking Cotton," rendered by Mr M'Dowell, the boys' tap ballet, comprising Messrs L. Powell. W. Parker and H. Wootton, provided a bright novelty. Two humorous interludes, " It's Moments Like These " and " Justice," added further to the variety of the programme. Mr S. Rigg again mystified his audience with sleight-of-hand tricks, and Mr Bert Nelson, on his one-wheel cycle, created a p - <»at deal of amusement. The various stalls were well patronised last night, and the chocolate alleys and various games of skill added to the merriment. The carnival will be continued nightly until October 17, and on Monday night there will be a change of programme in the vaudeville fare. The musical side of the entertainment is in the hands of Miss Roma Baker.
