MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Presbytery was held yesterday afternoon. The moderator, Dr J. D. Salmond, presided. A letter was received from the Rev. J. M. Thomson forwarding his presbyterial certificate from Southland, and stating that he had taken up his residence at St. Clair.—Noted. The Rev. W. W. Mac Arthur, Portobello, was granted further leave of absence, and the Rev. J. L. Taylor was appointed interim moderator of the Peninsula parish. The moderator stated he would be prepared to attend the. celebrations in connection with the seventieth anniversary of the. North Taieri Church, to be held on October 24 to October 26. The Rev. Mr Dodds was also appointed to attend the celebrations. CHURCH COLLEGES A deputation consisting of Dr Borrie, Messrs T. Somerville, A. C. Cameron, Stuart Cameron, and Mrs Ewing waited on the presbytery to ventilate certain matters connected with Columba and M'Glashan Colleges. Dr Bofrie stated that the deputation desired the assistance of the presbytery in connection with what was being, undertaken by the boards of both colleges. The two boards had conferred with the object of planning to obtain more pupils for the colleges, and, especially boarder pupils. He was quite sure that if the objects of the boards were put to the people they would support them and send their children to the colleges. As a result of the conference between the two boards it had been arranged with the Rev. H. A. Mitchell, of the Roslyn Church, that he should make a canvass of the Otago and Southland districts for the purpose of obtaining pupils. The Roslyn Church had agreed to release Mr Mitchell for a period of two months under certain conditions whereby his place at the church would be filled every second Sunday It was now 23 years since the presbytery had decided to form a school for girls, and they had buildings and grounds which any denomination would be proud to possess. Three years later M'Glashan College had been opened. The presbytery owned the schools and it owed a debt of duty to them. Both schools had excellent teaching staffs. , - Mr Somerville supported the remarks of Dr Borrie, and said he thought what was proposed by the governors of the two schools would have the heartiest support of the presbytery. He was satisfied that there were girls and boys in the country whose parents were able to send them to the colleges. . „ ' „ Mr A. C. Cameron said that the governors had a definite plan of canvassing and that members of the board would accompany Mr Mitchell on some of his visits to the country. Something in the region of £40,000 had been expended to establish and keep the colleges going. '•„._.' On the motion of the Rev. J. J. Cairney, it was decided that the presbytery endeavour in every possible way to cooperate with the boards of the two colleges in furtherance of the project which they had in hand. It was decided that the Rev. A. C. Standage be asked to supervise any necessary arrangements to fill the pulpit at the Roslyn Church during Mr Mitchell's absences. The Rev. H. J. Ryburn moved—- " That we communicate with the presbyteries in the Otago and Southland districts and solicit their support of the scheme, and that letters be also sent to the ministers and representative elders in Otago and Southland." The motion was carried. BURIAL SERVICES In connection with the responsibility of clergymen in the issuing of certificates at burials, the clerk (the Rev. J. D. Smith) said that replies on the matter had been received by the presbytery from the. Registrar-general and the Attorney-general. No reply had been received from the British Medical Association. The Attorney-general stated that amending legislation to the Births and" Deaths Registration Act of 1934 was under consideration to meet the difficulties referred to in the letter from the presbytery. The replies were noted. TRIALS FOR LICENCE The Rev. J. J. Cairney reported that two students —I. Poison and F. Winton —had applied for be taken on trial for licence. He moved that the applications be sustained, and this was agreed WAITATI CHURCH, The Rev. R. A. M'Dowall reported, on behalf of the Missions Committee, that the building of the manse at Waitati was under way. The cost was to have been £1370, but the price had jumped about £2OO as a result of the recent legislation by the Government. Permission was granted to the congregation to make a temporary loan of £ 1000 to meet necessary payments. ASSEMBLY BUDGET Mr J.
