ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS
" Old-age Pensioner," Heriot.—The first best step would be to write to the Registrar of Pensions, 397 Princes street, Dunedin, CI. If proof of the statements contained in the inquiry can be found the question of age could be satisfactorily disposed of. " Starter," Beaumont.—lf you will communicate your desires to a seedsman advertising in our columns 'he will advise you as to the best mixture of lawn grass for your purpose. You should have no difficulty in getting a good sole of grass on the, top-dressing. One ounce of seed to the square yard should be ample and it should not be necessary to pay more than 2s 6d per lb for a prime sample. "Interested," Lauder.—(l) In 1931 arid 1932 the Government introduced and had passed legislation reducing rents in proportion to the reductions in salaries and wages. It would be impossible, on the meagre particulars given, to say whether and how this legislation would affect a rent of 'ss per week and within what dates, if any, it would apply. The Fair Rents Act, which became law this year, applies to dwelling houses (excluding fiats) then let at a rental not exceeding £2lO per annum. This provides for the adjustment of a fair rent and both landlords and tenants have the right to use its provisions. (2) Wool scouring is done in machines specially designed for the purpose The principal requisites are a pure, soft water, a mild alkali, uniform temperature of the " scour," and as small a degree of mechanical agitation of tht wool, in washing as is compatible with' the thorough cleansing of the fibres. The apparatus consists of two or more tanks containing the " scour " or alkaline lye, in which the wool is immersed and gently made to travel from the receiving to the delivery end of the separate tanks, when it passes between a pair of squeezing rollers, and thence is conveyed to the drying chamber. A partially scoured wool does not dye a clean colour, and yields an imperfect yarn and an unsatisfactory cloth.
