OTAGO RUGBY UNION

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. Dr Perry, the president, occupied ' the chair. A letter was received from the West Coast Rugby Union congratulating the Otago team on its win against the West Coast and on its successful defence in the Ranfurly Shield games. Thanks were also given to the Otago Rugby Union for the hospitality extended to the visiting players. Congratulations to the. Otago Union on the performance of its team this year were received from the Southland Rugby Union, the Otago Football Association, the Otago Hockey Association, and the Auckland Rugby Union. The letter from the secretary of the Auckland Union (Mr'Maber) read as follows - — ".At the end of a very heavy season for your officials I am directed to convey to you this union's very sincere congratulations on staving off so many challenges for the Ranfurly Shield. Your representatives must have produced excellent football of which your public would get the benefit. Our felicitations are extended to a fine side which has proved its worth against the picked sides from all the major unions in New Zealand." Mr Albert Bidgood wrote inviting all the members of the Otago team to attend in turn the St. James, Empire, His Majesty's, Strand and Mayfair Theatres. The writer also extended hearty congratulations to the Otago team.—The matter of attendance at the theatres was left for Mr W Pearson to arrange. QUESTION OF SECESSION The chairman stated at the meeting of the committee of management the previous Monday a letter had been received from the Eastern District Sub-union giving its reasons for desiring to secede from the Otago Union and to join up with the North Otago Union. It had then been decided to ask the Eastern District Sub-union to supply a copy of the minutes at which the decision had been reached. The minutes of the extraordinary meeting of the sub-union, held on September 17, were before the meeting last night They stated that th:> sub-union had first he 1 ' a meeting of representatives from the different clubs and that the motion to secede had beei put and carried, four members objecting. The representatives of the clubs had then withdrawn, and the meeting of the executive of the sub-union had been resumed. The following motion had then been put and carried:—"That in the interests of football in this district the Eastern District Subunion take steps to join the North Otago Union and that the Otago Rugby Union be advised accordingly-" In the discussion which ensued it was stated that the Otago Union had never been aware that the subunion was dissatisfied with its control, and that the Otago Union might have to safeguard the interests of those clubs which might not be agreeable to the change. On the motion „f Mr D. C. Jolly, seconded by Mr H. Harris, it was decided to ask the sub-union to call a meeting of its delegates, and that the Otago Union send a deputation to the meeting U. h::r the reasons for the desire to secede The apoointment of delegates from the Otago Union was held over in the meantime.
