TAIERI RIVER TRUST

» MONTHLY MEETING OF COMMISSIONERS The monthly meeting of the Taieri River Trust was held at Mosgiel yesterday, there being present Commissioners T. M. Ball (chairman), C. Findlay, H. Wilson,-J.-M. Smith, A. Moore, J. Young, G. Lyall, and J. Dow. WORKS COMMITTEE'S REPORT The Works Committee recommended that the two electric motors in the old pumping station be removed and sold. The slip at Swanson's had been inspected, and it was found that about eight chains of this drain were slipping in, and the committee recommended that this work be put in hand when conditions were suitable. It was also recommended that Lake Ascog and Poplar drains be cleaned immediately. The top gang had been unable to get into the drains on account of the amount of water, and had cleaned the gorse on the contour down to the.Otokia road. It was further recommended that the bridge on B drain at Kirk's road and Clegg's road be removed and pipes inserted.—The report was adopted, and the recommendations were approved. INSPECTOR'S REPORT The inspector reported as follows on the work done during the past month: The drain through Shaw's and Timblick's, 38 chains long, had been cleaned out, and 26 chains of Scott's bank had been repaired. The impeller on No. 1 pump had been cleaned out, and Jurie's water pipe had been put in working order. A new drain five chains long had been cut for M'Fadzien, and a cover had been put over the pinion on Young's pump. The Centre road drain from A drain to J. Reid's, 375 chains in length, had been cleaned out, and Wain's drain box had been repaired. Two new platforms had been made for the excavator, and two more had been repaired. Gillespie's drain, 42 chains long, had been cleaned out, and Smith's box at hawthorn hedge had been filled in to prevent the river from flooding the land. At present he was engaged in cleaning out Lake Ascog drain, 16 chains having been done. The foreman of works reported that gorse had been grubbed from Beattie's bridge to Henderson's, and on D. Cameron's property. The contour bridge on D. Cameron's had been repaired with new posts and rails. Several chains of Patrick's lagoon had been cut and dragged, all slips had been removed from Beattie's drain, and the river bank had been attended to. The reports were adopted. S. Snell (Momonaj) wrote asking that a box be put in on the drain going through F. Johnson's property, as the water was coming back and flooding his land.-—The Works Committee was empowered to inspect the drain and report to the next meeting of the trust. James Thomson (Maungatua) made application to have the ditch running from Kirk's drain through his and W. Beattie's properties cleaned out at the earliest opportunity—Left to the Works Committee with power to act. The Under-secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs advised that the rates on lands within the Outram and Maungatua Ridings would this year be based on last year's valuations. This would apply to rates levied by the trust as well as the County Council's rates. The ordinary provision would, however, apply for other purposes; for example, the land tax and the new valuations for 'the current year would be used for such purposes. —Received.
