SUSTENANCE ABUSED

EARNINGS WRONGLY DECLARED ELDERLY MAN CONVICTED (Per United Press Association) WANGANUI, Oct. 5. In the Police Court to-day Leonard Isitt Whiteside, aged 60, admitted making three false declarations of earnings for the purpose of obtaining sustenance. In one instance he earned £5 14s lid privately and received £1 12s in sustenance. Mr J. S. Salmon, S.M., said that he had discovered that there was a good deal of abuse of sustenance. He considered that the only proper way to deal with offenders was to make it unprofitable to make false declarations. On each charge the defendant was fined £2 and costs (10s).
