WOMEN'S DIVISION N.Z. FARMERS' UNION

On October 1, at Mrs MacCarthy's residence, the Waihola branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union met. Miss Patterson presided. Mrs Elliot gave a talk on the conference. A competition was won by Mrs Dewar. The hostesses were Mesdame* MacCarthy and Petrie.

The Milburn-Clai'endon branch met at Clarendon on October 2, Mrs Elliott presiding. Donations were voted towards the Health Campaign and day nursery. The roll call was "A toilet hint." The competition—" Prettiest coathanger"—was won by Mrs Gardyne. Mrs Elliott gave a talk on "Continental Cathedrals," which she had visited. The hostesses were Mesdames M'Groiither, Cullen, and Kane, jun.

The members of the Ettrick branch arranged a " Surprise Party" at the residence of Mrs Hainsworth. After a programme of competitions, for which several prizes were given, the vice-president, Mrs Gibson, expressed the regret of the members at the departure of their president for Wellington. Mrs Tonkin then spoke in similar tones and, on behalf of the members, presented Mrs Hainsworth with a small token. After expressing her thanks to the members, Mrs Hainsworth wished the branch future success, and hoped they would continue during her absence.

Mrs Holgate presided at the October meeting of the Clutha branch. At the conclusion of the business a "bring and buy" sale of plants, flowers, etc.. was held. Hostesses were Mesdames D. Willocks, A. Anderson, and E. King, and Miss Wilson.

At the meeting of the Kakanui branch Miss N. Maxwell occupied the chair. Miss Robinson gave a demonstration of mixing and baking bread, and was accorded a vote of thanks. The winners of competitions were:— Paper flowers—Misses J. Chapman and M. Aitken (equal) 1, L. Pitt 3. RosesMiss L. Pitt 1 and 3, Miss N. Dean 2. Darning—Miss Aitken 1, Mrs Taylor 2, Miss J. Chapman 3. Premier bloomMiss N. Maxwell 1, Mrs Coles 2, Mrs Coles and Miss Pitt (equal) 3.

The Greenfield branch met on Thursday, Mrs Cross presiding. After business, Mrs Campbell (Dunedin) gave a talk on gardening and many rare species of plants were shown and admired by the members.

The Upper Waitaki branch meeting was held in the Kurow Sunday School hall on September 26. Mrs J. S. Adams (retired president) presided in the absence of Mrs J. R. Cleave (president) through illness. Mr Booth gave a demonstration on icing a cake. Members of the Farmers' Union joined the women and three junior members of the W.D.F.U. gave a play-reading. Hostesses were Mesdames M. Hayes, D. M'Gimpsen, E. Dunstan, and C. R. Hay. The competitions were won as follows:—Coffee sponge—Mrs D. W. Gillies 1, Mrs Wilson 2, Mrs A. M'Caw, sen., 3. Six spring flowers, three varieties—Miss M. Grant 1 and 2, Mrs Wilson 3.
