SPORT OF ANGLING

OPENING OF SEASON SOME GOOD CATCHES REPORTED Reports from various parts of Otago and South Canterbury indicate that the opening days of the angling season have provided good sport. In most districts the streams are well stocked, but in the south many are running high and are considerably discoloured. The weather conditions have not been in favour of anglers, and there has been little fishing done on the waters about Dunedin. It is probable that many Dunedin sportsmen will visit country streams for the week-end. The Tomahawk lagoon is said to be carrying a good stock of trout, and a good few Dunedin fishermen tried their luck there on Thursday night, but none reported good baskets. Several anglers from the city went to the Shag, and it is reported that most were successful in catching fish of good size and condition, but there were no large catches. A message received last night stated that the Waipahi River was in excellent order, and many limit baskets have been taken since the opening. „ „ In South Otago the weather was fine, with a cold wind blowing,, for the opening of the fishing season. The district streams were, contrary to expectation. very clear. Fishing on the Pomahaka, Mr A. Buchanan caught good trout, and in the Kaihiku Mr J, Geggie caught 12. Mr L. Cockerlll, fishing in the Molyneux at Finegand, landed seven fish, the largest a fivepounder. Mr W. Telford secured a good basket on the Waiwera, where Messrs J. Kirk and T. Milne also secured good results. Three rods from this district caught 20 fish at the Owaka Valley. Other parties from Balclutha had no luck on the Owaka. which was high and discoloured. The Opihi River has long been noted as “the fisherman’s paradise,” and so far as the opening of the fishing season in South Canterbury is concerned this favourite river still maintains its reputation. Some members of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society are spending a few days fishing in the rivers of the district, and they have stated that their expectations regarding the value of the Opihi for dry fly fishing have been more than realised. They secured baskets of good-sized and well-conditioned trout. On the opening day fish were taking well.
