THE OTAGO RUGBY TEAM

PROPOSED RECOGNITION OF PLAYERS’ SERVICES CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE MEETING At the second meeting, which was held last night, of the Citizens’ Committee, formed last week to collect money in order to make presentations to the representative Rugby football players, emergencies, coaches, and trainers, it was decided to place the order at once for the mementoes. The memento is in the form of a greenstone slab set on a kauri base, with the figure of an Otago footballer in silver and enamel standing in the centre of a football field.

Mr A. R. Lawry, the chairman, said that a jeweller had quoted a price of £2 each for a quantity of these, so that in presenting them to the footballers they would not be injuring the amateur status of the recipients. As it would take a month for all the mementoes to be made, it was desirable that they should place an order immediately, as the committee could be sure that sufficient money to pay for the presentations would be forthcoming. The treasurer, Mr W G. Kindley, stated that £32 6s 6d had already been received towards the funds. On the motion of Mi D. C. Jolly it was resolved —“ That an appeal for public subscriptions should be made through the two daily newspapers immediately, and that the lists should be closed on October 13.”

Messrs G. Goughian, D. C. Jolly and J. F. Himburg were appointed an Entertainment Committee to suggest the form of entertainment that should be held at which the presentations could be made. A motion —“ That a letter should be sent to the Otago Rugby Football Union asking its approval of the presentations ” —was carried, as was one “ That this meeting expresses its appreciation of the assistance and co-operation of the O.R.F.U. Committee.”

At the request of the Citizens’ Committee we have agreed to open a list of subscriptions to the fund for the public entertainment of members of the Otago team, and for the presentation to each of them of a memento of the football season. The presentation is authorised by the O.R.F.U. Committee subject to the value of it being such as is permissible under the laws of the game. The list will remain open until October 12 and no later. The following contributions have been received: —

£ s. d. Collected at Carisbrook 26 6 6 A. and T. Inglis, Ltd. .. 5 0 0 V. S. Jacobs 10 0
