INCREASES IN WAGES (Per United Press Association) PALMERSTON N., Sept. 29. Increases in the rates of pky and an extra fortnight’s leave for firemen are granted in an agreement reached to-day in the Conciliation Council proceedings between the Wellington Fire Brigade Employees’ 'Jnion and the Palmerston North Fire Board. Considerable interest attaches to the settlement, as the terms are likely to be treated as a basis for disputes affecting fire brigades’ conditions in provincial centres. The wages fixed were:— Probationer firemen £3 5s a week, third-class firemen £3 7s fid. second.class £3 19s fid, first-class £4 9s fid, senior £4 10s, firemen-mechanic £4 12s fid. Married men not provided with living quarters are granted £1 extra and single men 5s extra where there is no mess.
