HISTORY OF RUGBY
FORMATION OF FIRST CLUB CHRISTCHURCH CLAIM ADVANCED (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 29. The statement made in a recent letter to the New Zealand Rugby Union by Mr K. C. Tennent, of Woodville, concerning the formation of the first Rugby football club in the Dominion is challenged by a newspaper correspondent, who says: “ Mr Tennent is wrong in spying that the club he assisted to form in Nelson in 1868 was the first football club in New Zealand. The Christchurch Football Club was formed in 1863. This club lost the records of its first four years, so the dates were carried from 1867, when the existing records began.” The correspondent adds that confirmation is to be found in old newspaper files of the sixties. Actually football was played in Christchurch and Lyttelton in 1862, and rules for the game were drawn up at Christ’s College that year.
